Due to the recent reports in the media on outbreaks of MRSA staphylococcal infections among student athletes nationwide, SHS has taken action in accordance with the Illinois Department of Public Health’s guidelines to reduce the risk of spreading skin infections. One effort underway is to educate our students, faculty, and staff in basic infection control measures including but not limited to:
- Wash hands frequently using soap & water or hand sanitizer.
- Shower with soap after athletic practices and competitions.
- Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage.
- Do not share personal care/hygiene items with others.
- Wash uniforms or clothing used in athletics daily.
Students with suspicious skin lesions including pustules that aren’t acne, open or weeping wounds, and lesions that resemble “bug bites” should report to the school nurse or their athletic coach before participating in practice or competition.
